Beautiful Weekend...

Quick update on a wonderful weekend. First, just to prove my last post, the first picture is of Imaapik, Shawn and James trying to ice fish during our camping trip just one weekend ago when we were at Short Lake 2 or so hours away. Noticed we are on the lake, many feet thick still, and the trees are totally full of deep snow in the distant background...

And then we arrive at the beginning of May (by the way, Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad), and it is near summer weather. After attending Heather and Andrea's sleepover on Friday night, the 6 of us decided to hike to Alacie's Lake for a picnic. We liked the adventure of it, since it is about 4 km from town. It was a great hike and the lake was actually really quite melted. There was still thin ice in the middle of the lake, but the edges were all water near the dock where we sat and ate in the brillant warm sun. A few of the girls (and Erik) cooled down their feet by running barefoot on the wet ice.

By the time we got home, we were very hot, with sunburned ears and very thirsty, AND IT'S ONLY THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY!! Here's my hiking buddies, Erik, Andrea, Heather Rose, Maxime, Saladie, Julianne and two tag-a-long dogs for wolf and bear protection. On Sunday, the weather was even warmer for Maxime, Heather and I went out again to another mountain top lake for a picnic. This lake is neighbouring the airport, and it was about 6 km round trip. We hiked up over the tundra moss, rocky outcrops and muddy puddles to a beautiful lake that has a little peninsula on one end. We sat on the end right next to the water and soaked in the fresh air and even warmer sun rays over lunch. After lunch, we found a piece of fishing line in the bushes so we crafted a make-shift fish hook out of a bent key ring, with a cashew and dried craisin, and surprisingly we actually had a few little trout following our hook! It was quite exciting, even if they didn't bite! All in all, it was a very fun start to the warm weather mindset. I hope we might hike and sleep out in a pup tent next weekend, but the temperatures look like they are dipping down to closer to normal this week, with -1 the low for Friday. I guess we'll have to wait and see!!
