Has it been only two days of work so far???

Okay, seriously is someone playing a joke on me? Is it really only Tuesday of this week!! I seriously thought that it must be Wednesday or Thursday at least!! that was my thoughts at about 2 pm today in the middle of my first secondary meeting of the year. (Quite a painful experience as no one wants to take leadership, and then the ones that do are met usually by major opposition and no better solutions. These meetings last MUCH longer than they should, and we usually re-hash things many times over before deciding on something that was suggested in the start! argh!)
Enough negativity. Funny thing happened to me today, and really shows that sometimes our feelings are all a matter of perspective. Was sitting in my class about an hour ago. It is getting to be close to supper and wafting in through my window was the sweet smell of burning wood. It reminded me of campfires and made my stomach ache for roasted hot dogs, slow roasted over the red coals after the flames have died down. (Oh, you know the ones I am talking about, and if you don't invite me over for a fire next summer and I will show you a hot dog worth writing a blog entry for!)
I digress, the smell was just like someone was roasting hot dogs just outside my window. When suddenly it dawned on me, WHY would someone have a fire right behind the school?! I spun around in my chair and saw that the entire sky was filled with smoke and even the mountains were shrouded by it. The smoke seemed to be originating from the Northwest, and I realised where it was coming from like a flash! They must be burning at the dump. I have been around a couple of times when they have had to burn the trash to make more space. After visiting the dump a few days ago and seeing all of the scrap wood, and doors, and old siding that was taking down during the recent community renovations, I wasn't surprised.
Then I revisited my former fondness for the smell. I can't believe I actually liked that smell. Like turned into disgust a bit and I swiftly closed my clasroom windows. It's all perspective, what was sweet smelling turned out to be gross when I knew where it was coming from... Weird, surely that happens to us in life too. Live and learn...
Time for me to go, I thought I would post a bit earlier today than I typically do. I will however, undoubtably be on and off all evening. Tomorrow we meet our students at 11 am, we always have a meeting where the principal talks about the importance of doing your best, respecting others and making decisions carefully. this is usually followed by a role call and a brief description of the next few days of school. We have an activity planned for Thursday afternoon, teacher hunt/ survivor challenge. Should be fun!
Until then, take care of yourselves! G.

That's was funny-- hope you haven't lost your liking for campfire hot dogs though--- now you may liken that to garbage!!! Busy day---- know all about those staff meetings, can almost predict who will say what- won't miss that part-- meeting the kids-- seems like you already know them, so that part of first day jitters shouldn't be so bad, if kids only knew their teachers were just as nervous meeting them as vice versa-- will be checking in and out, before and after Big Brother----

True- I was nervous the first two years a little bit about meeting the students and now I really do know all of the secondary students so well, that the first day is a breeze.

I also have made it a habit of making my face seen a lot in the Grade 7 class so I can get to know the new Secondarys before they come to our end of the school. They usually recognize me and really depend on me the first few weeks to help them when they are lost or confused with their schedule... It's nice, and I enjoy helping them that way!

Staff meetings can be awfully brutal especially since certain important messages need to be translated into three languages- English, French and Inuktitut... I guess I kind of got used to it at Uni. of Ottawa, and officially bilingual university.

BTW, have just started to get into Big Brother... it's very good... tends to be my supper hour show these days!

You'll soon get back into the swing of things I'm sure. A lot of different smells can bring back memories. Whenever I smell Lilacs I think of my Grandmother who I adored. I don't even know why they remind me of her. Luckily I have a lilac bush right outside my bedroom window. And although they don't stay in bloom for very long I still get to smell that wonderful smell for a few days and it warms my heart. Good luck to you. Hope winter doesn't set in too soon.

Actually I love winter time and hope it comes soon... It kills the mosquitoes and then I can drive skidoo... Weird I know, but I love how clean everything looks with white snow on it. unlike Yarmouth which has slush everywhere and that mix of white and brown...

I better get back to work for now, I just finished my staff meeting and needed a quick break- thanks for the message.. something to help relieve the headache!

I detect a common thread-- Back to work = headache for you, sore throat for connie,, hmmm, work could be dangerous to your health!!! How's that for a doctorate!!!

LOL, yep, I do think there is something connected to working and sickness.

I read an article once and it really did discuss a correlation between increased number of hours worked by people and reduced health. Supposedly they were also studying how over the years people have become sooo much more productive due to technology, that they are simply doing more work in the same amount of time....

I am sounding like a workaholic and Big Brother JUST started so I HAVE to go!
